Paddle Port (Washington)

June 9, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

Port Washington is our destination – YES.. sea kayaking will be our mission on this day. If you have never been to Port Washington, the put-in location is one of the better places to launch and land a kayak (in the area). The parking lot to water travel distance is about 75 feet (depending on water level height). The parking lot usually can hold at least 20 cars, and at times, I have seen 30 park in the area. There is a porta-potty present, and is usually clean. The beach is a mix of small rocks to sand, and on warmer days draws in the beach goers. The coastline in which we will be paddling is fully accessible from the water, should the need to get off the water is needed.

We shall paddle south down towards Lion’s Den, take a break on the beach, or play in the water, and paddle back to our cars. Majority of the coastline during the trip has a rather tall bluff and noticeable erosion can be seen – the true power of mother nature at work through the years. Only a few houses on this bluff can be seen from the water – unless one paddles at least a quarter to half mile off shore.

Experienced paddlers will be required for this trip – those who have solid self and assisted rescue skills (why not take a class in rescues), able to preform a wet exit, ability to launch and land into possible breaking waves and proper paddle clothing (if needed). Touring or sea kayaks should only be used during this trip. This trip is truly weather dependent – if the conditions exceed a favorable paddle , the trip will be either postponed, or rescheduled. For this and all paddle trips on Lake Michigan, we shall closely observe the paddle conditions and will advise you of predictions.

This will be at least a 4 hour paddle trip (with some time on the shore at Lion’s den), Round trip is just over 6 miles. Water conditions are ever changing, and can change with little notice. Dress for immersion, as the water temps at this time of year fluctuate and can either be 58 degrees or 68 degrees (we shall find out).

Additional packing list will be provided as we draw closer to the date.

Kayaks and gear are provided in the cost of this trip – if needed.

Maximum participation will be 8.

Please also register for this to ensure there is availability. Cost $65.
